Before the Score
He has a new rule: do not bring the score to a space you have not heard.
The rule formed when Sujin said larger ceiling and he walked through every measured space in the building looking for where the circle-question-mark phrase might live. He found it in the data: the processing floor, unused since 2019, 8.4 meters. The tallest space he had figures for. He had never been there with an instrument. He had never been there at all, not in the years he had been mapping the building, because the processing floor was not a relay junction, not a stairwell, not part of the route.
The score had been waiting for a room he did not know existed.
What the Room Is Like
Monday, late morning. He walks in alone.
The ceiling is higher than he expected even knowing the measurement. 8.4 meters reads differently as a number than as the experience of looking up and having more room above you than the building should plausibly contain. The processing floor was used for equipment he has no name for -- there are anchor points in the concrete floor, spaced irregularly, bolts without machinery. The walls are bare. Clerestory windows on the north side let in pale light that does not reach the far wall.
He walks to the center and stops.
Listening
He has no instrument. No thermometer. He brought nothing.
The rule says: hear the room before you bring the score. He is not sure what hearing a room means without a measuring instrument. He stands still and tries to find out.
What he notices: his footsteps on the way in were louder here than in the relay corridors. The sound did not decay the way he expects -- it traveled and came back changed. Not an echo exactly. The room returned something different from what he sent.
He claps once.
The clap expands. This is not the relay junction behavior (short decay, tight, the building holds less in cold). The clap here unfolds -- takes time, finds the walls and the ceiling and the floor, returns in layers. The room is not holding sound less. The room is holding sound longer.
The Circle-Question-Mark Phrase
He hears the phrase in his head without the instrument -- the second movement, the passage Sujin annotated and he circle-question-marked because no known conditions could produce it. The phrase requires sustain the relay corridors cannot provide. The phrase asks the room to hold the sound while the phrase is still happening.
This room would hold it.
He is certain before he can measure anything. He is certain the way Sujin was certain when she said larger ceiling -- before the data, in the body, in the ear.
The New Layer
He takes out his notebook. Writes: Processing floor. 8.4m. North clerestory light. Sound returns in layers, not decay. Circle-question-mark phrase: viable.
Below that: Bring Sujin before bringing measurements. She will know before the thermometer does.
The map now has a space that does not exist in the data yet -- a room that the score needed before he knew the room was there. He is not sure what layer this belongs to. He writes it on a separate page: things the score knew before I did.
