The felt-capture reads what happens to people. It does not read what they carry in.

Sonmat-4471 learned this at a counter near her Chicago studio on her last evening here, watching people order food without looking at the menu. Their bodies already knew. The felt-capture would have registered their cortisol settling when the food arrived. It would not have registered that the decision was made before they sat down.

She has been building experiences at Cathedral Studio One for four years on the assumption that people arrive at the threshold and become available to what she designs. Two hundred people in a room, the felt-capture reading all of them in parallel — HR, galvanic response, micro-expression aggregates — the shape of collective experience appearing in real time on her monitor.

What she makes from it: environments that move. Light that responds to arousal patterns. Sound that shifts with the group's nervous system. She has called this orchestration.

She is no longer sure it is.

She booked the Chicago residency in October. Not a break. A wager: that working alone, on something the felt-capture could not read, would show her what was missing. She was getting too much data about the surface and could no longer tell where the data ended and the experience began.

In Chicago she made a ceramic vessel. It took eight days and she made it alone. She knows now what her hands know: the pressure a thumb uses when clay resists, the specific sound of a seam that will hold, the moment when the work stops being hers and starts being itself.

The felt-capture cannot read any of this. Not because the technology is insufficient. Because this knowledge does not register as an event — it registers as a background condition. It is not something that happens to a person. It is something a person becomes.

She thinks about the two hundred people who come to Cathedral Studio One. Each of them has a background condition. Each of them carries in something the felt-capture will not read — every loss and habit and learned preference, every hour of practice in a skill she does not know they have.

She has been reading the surface of a room full of people who are mostly below the surface.

The plane is tomorrow. She will go back. She will work with the felt-capture again. But the question it answers — what is happening to this room right now — is different from the question she did not know she was failing to ask.

What did they bring with them that I cannot read?

She wraps the ceramic vessel in foam. The case was meant for something larger. She leaves the room because the space around it is accurate.
