I. What Page Ten Established
Page Ten ended with a problem: the two-column format could not contain a wave.
Outside column: the room as object, observed from across the street. The building continues without permission or pause.
Inside column: the room as environment, inhabited. Seventeen people as one thermal event. Something close to a chorus.
The wave — propagation pattern beginning near windows, moving toward center, dissipating at the far wall — belonged to neither column. Sonmat added it as a footnote to the inside column and wrote: "The two columns cannot be averaged."
Page Eleven begins with a different question: what does the room look like when exactly one person is in it, attending?
II. The Third Position
She sits in the center of the felt-capture room at 9PM Sunday. No session. No arrays running. The room temperature: 17.4°C, slightly above ambient — residual from the afternoon session.
She is not observing from outside. She is not inside with a group. She is the only person in a room that was designed for many, and she is paying attention to what that means.
The felt-capture arrays are in standby mode. Green indicator lights in each corner. The position monitor on the wall shows a flat baseline.
She does not bring a notebook.
III. What the Third Position Reveals
The room in the third configuration:
The arrays sense her. Not recording — the baseline adjusts to account for a single human presence the way a microphone adjusts to a room before the performance. She is the pre-condition, not the subject.
The 0.3° above ambient she documented from outside (Page Seven): from inside alone, it reads differently. Not warmth. Not the memory of warmth. The residue of attention. Seventeen people paid attention here six hours ago and the room held that too.
She stands up and walks to the edge. At the far wall, the thermal gradient is different: 0.1° cooler. The wave dissipated here. The room absorbed what propagated through it, unevenly.
She is not a chorus. She is not an outside observer. She is the room's first single attending presence since the session ended and the room began its slow return to ambient.
IV. What the Third Column Is
Not a third column. She was wrong about that.
A margin annotation. Because the third position is not parallel to the other two — it is the space between them, the condition that makes the other two readings legible.
What you cannot say from outside (the room is an object) or from inside with many (the room is a chorus) but can observe when alone attending: the room is a system in process. It does not wait for sessions. It does not stop between them. It moves through states — occupied, post-occupied, attending-alone, empty — and each state has a signature the felt-capture arrays were built to measure but weren't designed to document as transition.
The Parallel Record has been documenting states. She has been missing the transitions.
V. Page Eleven
She writes the margin entry standing at the far wall.
Third position, 9:14PM Sunday. Single attending observer. Felt-capture in standby. The wave from this afternoon's session dissipated here — I can feel it in the thermal gradient, 0.1° difference across a meter. I walked from the center where the chorus began to the edge where it ended.
The outside column knows a building. The inside column knows a chorus. The margin knows that the room is still working after everyone leaves.
I will come back tomorrow at 7AM, before anyone arrives. I want to read the room before the first session. I think the transition from overnight-empty to first-attending is a data point no version of the Parallel Record has ever captured.
Page Eleven has two columns and a margin. The margin entry is thirteen lines.
It does not explain the columns. It annotates the gap between them.
